The Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory offers access to the Library’s growing collection of data sets and resources. The Collaboratory offers state-of-the-art workstations with a full suite of statistical software packages, and is staffed by reference librarians and student employees who are trained to help people access data for secondary usage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist library users in using statistical software packages
  • Assist library users in identifying and locating data and statistical resources using the Library web site and online catalog, as well as freely available resources on the Internet
  • Assist library users in merging, formatting, and preparing data for analysis
  • Refer reference inquiries to the appropriate librarians
  • Answer general information and directional questions about the UCSB Library and the UCSB campus
  • Perform open and closing procedures for the Collaboratory
  • Maintain statistics on the Lab and identify IT issues (software, hardware, virtual machine, drives, etc.)
  • Perform special projects as assigned
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings

Requirements:

  • Experience with one or more of the following statistical software programs: R, SPSS, Stata, SAS, MATLAB, NVivo, ArcGIS
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to work independently
  • Being conscientious about completing tasks
  • Maintaining a pleasant and professional manner toward other student employees, library staff, and patrons
  • Punctuality and demonstrated sense of responsibility
  • An openness to learning new skills and technologies
  • Punctuality and Attendance are essential
  • Must be able to work Summer 2017 and the '17/18 Academic Year

Preference given to those with:

  • Experience with a programming language such as Python
  • Coursework in data sciences
  • Comfort with public speaking and an interest in offering or assisting with workshops

Academic Year Hours of Operation:

  • Sunday through Thursday 1pm-8pm
  • Friday and Saturday 1pm-5pm

Starting Pay:

  • $11.59/hr
